Just over a month after the fire at South Africa’s Parliamentary precinct, arson is suspected after a fire broke out in the basement of St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town in the early hours of Sunday. The dean of the cathedral, Rev Michael Weeder, said “a lit piece of cotton/gauze was thrown through the small, barred window near the steps leading up to the cathedral’s Wale Street entrance” and “someone was spotted running away from the cathedral”. City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said the fire was extinguished just before 4am and “no damage to the structure was incurred”.
