Cabinet last week approved that the Government pronounce Gender Based Violence a threat to humanity, and that the Prime Minister should issue a Parliamentary Statement to that effect, instead of the declaration of a State of Emergency requested by demonstrators. Cabinet also approved that law enforcement agencies enhance regular patrols in all regions, and that members of the public should be sensitised to render assistance and provide vital information to law enforcement agencies in the fight against gender-based violence. Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila told Future Media News that they have also directed the Ministries of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare, and Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security to strengthen the capacity of the Gender Based Violence and Forensic Units to deal with GBV cases and approved the promotion of neighbourhood watch and community network policing, as part of the social responsibility by all Namibians.
