Fire Fighters in Cape Town remained on high alert on Monday evening to deal with any possible flare-ups of the devastating wildfire. This as Table Mountain National Parks’ Philip Prins explained that although some of the vegetation fire has been extinguished, the roots of the vegetation still remain a high risk as they could ignite and cause flare-ups. Prins stressed that it does not look like the fire will be extinguished immediately, but they they “hop[e] to extinguish [it] by the end of the week”. Meanwhile archival specialists are still trying to assess the damage to South Africa and Africa’s cultural heritage as it is unclear how many old books and documents were destroyed inside the University of Cape Town’s Jagger Library, which houses an African studies collection.
