The latest Household Affordability Index in South Africa, conducted by the Economic Justice and Dignity Group to track food prices in 44 supermarkets and 30 butcheries, has found that basic food items such as sugar, beans, rice, flour, and bread have seen price hikes of between 31 and 68 percent. The group’s Mervyn Abrahams says a basket of 43 basic foods has now breached the level of a national minimum wage
