The World Health Organisation says the Covid-19 situation remains “perilous” — as new variants, unfair vaccine distribution, and the relaxation of public health measures too soon — drives the transmission. Speaking at the WHO conference on research and innovation, Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom said cases and deaths are increasing particularly rapidly in south-east Asia. UN News reports that while vaccines are reducing severe disease and death in countries fortunate enough to have them in sufficient quantities, the “shocking” global disparity in access remains “one of the biggest risks to ending the pandemic”, underscored the WHO chief.
