Following the story yesterday about 700 homes being destroyed and 24 people killed in South Africa’s Kwazulu-Natal Province, it is now reported that the Eastern Cape is also seeking to have a provincial state of disaster declared following torrential rains that left 17 people dead. This, News24 reports, follows incidents of flooding and other natural disasters, including a tornado, that affected most parts of the province over the past month, particularly over the past weekend. The Red Cross has meanwhile mobilised R6.4 million to cover households’ basic needs and recovery, as well as the procurement and delivery of blankets and 1 500 hygiene kits.
