The West African bloc ECOWAS will meet virtually on Friday to discuss the crisis in Burkina Faso, where army officers have deposed President Roch Marc Christian Kabore. Al Jazeera reports that the 15 member bloc, which includes Burkina Faso, had already condemned Monday’s coup. It is thought that Friday’s meeting could result in the imposition of sanctions similar to those slapped on Mali, where the military-led government said this month it planned to hold power through 2025, going back on a previous agreement to organise elections this February. The bloc could also suspend Burkina Faso’s membership, as has been done with Mali, and Guinea, where a coup also took place last September.
