Founder and former Executive Director of the Institute for Security Studies, Dr. Jakkie Cilliers, says that the South African Police Service needs to be reformed, that policing should be decentralised to provincial, metropolitan and municipality levels, and detectives empowered. Cilliers, speaking during a News24 panel discussion, added that President Cyril Ramaphosa needs to start taking the security sector “seriously” and that he should “clean it out of the political appointments that have been made”. He also called on the government to invest in crime trends analysis, as well as maintaining standards, such as forensics.
