Gunmen have killed over 100 people after ransacking a group of villages in central Nigeria in one of worst attacks this year blamed on heavily armed criminal gangs who terrorise parts of the country. The AFP news agency, in an article you can read in full on the News Blog page of the Future Media website, reports that details of the attack were still sketchy, with local officials and security forces confirming the assault but declining to give a death toll, however an operational commander of the local vigilantes who work with security forces told the agency they had recovered 107 bodies, including 16 members of his group. Another community leader gave a similar figure for the number of fatalities.
