The Auditor General’s audit report for the 2018/19 financial year reveals that government spent N$ 85.2 billion to foot the salary bill of civil servants between 2017 and 2019.This, the Namibia press agency reports reaffirms that around half of government’s annual budget goes to salaries, a situation described as unsustainable by politicians and economic experts alike. At the same time Minster of Finance Ipumbu Shiimi recently conceded that government cannot retrench or send those aged 55 into early retirement as it lacks the funds to do so.
