A group of diverse Namibian media professionals have written a letter of complaint to President Hage Geingob, expressing their dissatisfaction with Press Secretary Dr. Alfredo Hengari. In the letter the journalists say that “Hengari has, since 2018, continued to use tactics that bluntly undermine the role of the press”. “His lack of humility and continued attacks on the role of the media using his opinion pieces and presidency statements”, they say “have clearly created a sour relationship between the media and [the Office of the Presidency]”. Geingob is, in the letter, asked to take remedial actions, as he deems fit, to ensure that Dr Hengari respects and upholds press freedom as guaranteed in Chapter 3 (Article 21) of the Namibian Constitution, and to address Hengari’s “nonchalant attitude towards the media” and remind him “of his duties as press secretary”. The letter by the journalists comes a day after a similar open letter addressed to the President by the Editors Forum of Namibia.
