Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered the police to arrest and press treason charges against anyone caught vandalising national infrastructure projects, ordering them to “be ruthless when dealing with criminals caught selling scrap metals”. Kenyans.co.ke reports that this comes after some of Kenya Power’s High voltage power lines had been vandalized and the cross beams removed or unbolted, leading to the collapse that caused a major outage, and, in November 2021, police catching two people suspected of vandalizing the Standard Gauge Railway line which caused a two-hour delay of the train service. The president also announced a ban on the buying and selling of scrap metal until the government institutes proper guidelines to regulate the industry and curb crime.
