The Khomas Regional Council on Wednesday held a muted event in remembrance of Cassinga Day that saw governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua and about 15 Cassinga survivors lay a wreath at the national Heroes Acre in Windhoek. The Namibia press agency reports that the event, which was held in memory of those who paid the ultimate price with their lives 44 years ago as well as those who survived the tragic event, lasted less than 15 minutes – a far cry from what Namibians have become accustomed to when the nation commemorates the day.
