The stones that set off a “diamond rush” in South Africa’s Kwazulu-Natal Province are not diamonds but rather quartz crystals. This, News24 reports after a delegation made up of geo-scientists and government officials travelled to the village that sprang up on the side of a hill about 40km from Ladysmith, to see whether the claims were true and amid concerns that the “diamond rush” could turn into a Covid-19 superspreader event. The value of the crystals is yet to be established, but it is relatively low compared to diamonds.
