The KwaZulu-Natal provincial co-operative governance and traditional affairs department has revealed that recent storms destroyed 700 homes, affected nearly 11,000 people and claimed 24 lives, with the damage estimated at R3.2bn. Times Live quotes the department as saying that the province usually experienced weather-related incidents during the summer season “such as heavy rains that lead to localised flooding, hail, severe thunderstorms and structural collapses”. It said it had “activated disaster operations centres in all district municipalities” and was working with NGOs “in the provision of relief to affected communities”.
