Malawi’s government on Tuesday announced the immediate closure of borders for 14 days as the country is experiencing a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases. Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda made the announcement at a press briefing held in the capital, Lilongwe. Only essential services personnel and traffic carrying essentials like fuel and medicines would be allowed through the borders. After nearly two months without new positive cases, Malawi on Tuesday recorded 46 new infections, bringing the total number of infections to 6,248, with 187 deaths, according to the country’s health ministry.
