South African Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi on Wednesday set the record straight regarding recent congestion at the Beitbridge border post saying that among reported inaccuracies were claims that the government, particularly his department, failed to plan ahead to reduce huge congestion at the border. Times Live quotes Motsoaledi as saying the congestion was un-forseeable and was due to Botswana deciding to impose stringent lockdown regulations and a strict curfew, not even allowing trucks through after hours. Due to this many trucking companies that usually choose to travel via Botswana diverted their trucks to the Beitbridge border post with Zimbabwe which completely overwhelmed the post. Motsoaledi further blamed drivers for panicking and abandoning prior arrangements which had been made to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.
