The Cheetah Cement facility outside Otjiwarongo was shut down on Tuesday by the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation due to non-compliance with labour laws on the health and safety of employees. The Ministry said the closure would be in effect from the 10 May 2022 until all identified hazardous areas have been rectified and that the company should inform the labour inspectors who would come verify before any resumption of work takes place. Mine Manager, Immanuel Shilongo meanwhile told the Namibia press agency that the identification and rectification of the listed hazardous areas will start on Wednesday so that production can re-commence next week.
