The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform is currently fighting the 3rd locust outbreak in the Karasburg District in the //Kharas Region. This as good to fair rains received in the Ariamsvlei area, measuring up to 50 mm in parts, have created a favourable breeding environment for locusts with the areas having received daily fly-in, mating egg-laying adult, brown locusts from South Africa. As on Monday the Ministry spraying was carried out at the farms Nakop up to Swartkop, covering approximately 80 000 ha. Given the hard to access landscape and terrain of the area though it is possible that there are more undetected young locusts and the Ministry expects more reports in the next two weeks as soon as they begin hopping.
