Mobile operators MTN and Vodacom could possibly face legal action over the unlawful use of location-based data in the murder of top Cape Town cop Charl Kinnear. Last month, the Daily Maverick reported that the criminals who plotted the shooting of Kinnear used a location-based service to track his cellphone. According to MyBroadband, wireless application service providers were given full access to subscribers’ sensitive location data, with the understanding that they would not abuse this data. However, the location information was available to anyone.
