The Namibia press agency quotes the head of Nampol’s GBV sub-division in the Erongo Region, Detective Chief Inspector Selma Shangula, as saying that while cases have been on the increase since 2017 the police force encounters challenges in the prevention, detection and investigation of sexual and gender-based violence, including the reluctance of people to report cases and submit witness statements, interference due to cultural and traditional beliefs, and the high number of withdrawals of criminal cases. Shangula also said the mushrooming of liquor outlets, an increase in alcohol and drug use amongst young children, lack of parental responsibilities towards children, and the lack of political will and leadership are some of the factors hampering the police force in combating crime.
