The University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg says it is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a 35-year-old man during a fees protest at this institution on Wednesday morning. University spokesperson Shirona Patel has confirmed that the man killed after being hit by rubber bullets was not a student at the university but a passerby who got caught in a clash between demonstrators and police. Meanwhile, the education union Nehawu’s national spokesperson, Khaya Xaba has condemned the use of force by police during the protest.
