South Africa’s National Department of Health and the Solidarity Fund has announced that the down payment of 19,2 million USD (R283m at the exchange rate at the time of payment) has been made to GAVI (the Vaccine Alliance) to secure the country’s entry into the COVAX facility. In a media statement, South Africa’s department of health said the down payment represents 15% of the total cost of securing access to vaccines for 10% (roughly 6 million) of the population. The Minister of Health, Dr. Zwelini Mkhize, has hailed this milestone as the epitome of excellence in health service delivery through multilateralism.
