South Africa’s National Agriculture Marketing Council’s latest report shows there has been a dramatic increase in the price of a number of food items with rice being flagged as having increased the most. The report, according to Newsflash, shows a 52-percent year-on-year increase in the price of rice. Bread and the cereal category saw a spike of up to 25.6-percent while bean products went up by almost 18-percent. According to the Council, their 28-item urban food basket for January came to 971-rand compared to 959-rand in December.
