In news from South Africa, the ANC national executive committee lekgotla which ended its weekend-long meeting on Sunday has resolved that the country has to immediately start preparing for future pandemics, including by investing in its own vaccine development programme. Times Live reports that in his opening remarks on Friday, President Cyril Ramaphosa urged members to discuss how the country, and Africa at large, could better prepare for future pandemics, saying it was clear they had not been ready for this one. Ramaphosa also, while focusing on the need to build a “broad acceptance” of the vaccine programme and “vigorously tackle misinformation and misunderstanding” said members needed to be disciplined in [their] own public pronouncements, ensuring that [they] speak accurately and clearly. This after several ANC members have in the past spread falsehoods and conspiracies, including blaming 5G for the spread Covid-19 and questioning the role of billionaire Bill Gates.
