In the next 12 to 18 months, South Africans may be able to buy and sell listed cryptocurrencies on local exchanges, in a completely regulated environment. This, Fin24 reports, as the South African Reserve Bank is starting to look at declaring cryptocurrency as a financial product and regulating it. Initially, the central bank’s stance was that it would “look” at cryptocurrency developments, but it would not get involved. But given the vast level of transactions that South Africans are doing in a completely unregulated space, it says it has realised that it is better to bring cryptocurrency under its regulation.
