In what many say is his final act of defiance, outgoing South African national police commissioner Khehla Sitole has ordered that all the force’s top brass and the rank and file must reapply for their jobs despite an express instruction from Minister Bheki Cele late last year that it be halted. City Press reports that Sitole also issued a directive that police informants should henceforth pay tax for the money they receive for passing on information, something police insiders believe will unnecessarily endanger the identities of the informants. It is not clear yet how Cele will likely react.
