President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the national celebration of Freedom Day Middelburg, Mpumalanga, today as South Africa marks 28 years of freedom and democracy. The Presidency reports that Freedom Day will be observed this year under the theme “Consolidate our Democratic Gains”, to mark South Africa’s transition from apartheid to democracy. But many, including Prof Amanda Gouws, Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Stellenbosch University, have asked what freedom really means? especially for many South Africans whose lives have not changed much or become freer since 1994. Mashupye Herbert Maserumule, Professor of Public Affairs at the Tshwane University of Technology, meanwhile asks in an article published on The Conversation, and which you can read on the News Blog page of the Future Media website, whether the day is even still worthy of commemoration?
