A firefighter sustained burn wounds while battling the massive fire that raged at Rhodes Memorial on Sunday, spreading down to the University of Cape Town, destroying several parts of campus, and forcing the evacuation of approximately 4000 students. Times Live meanwhile reports that the university’s vice-chancellor announced the suspension of academic activities, saying that to ensure student and staff safety, the campus would only be accessible to emergency services. She would not elaborate on the extent of the damage to the Rondebosch campus but said UCT had made food and emergency accommodation available for students who were evacuated and that trauma counselling was available for affected students and staff.
