Ukraine has downplayed a possible incursion by Russia saying not to believe “apocalyptic predictions” after US officials said Moscow had assembled 70 percent of the military force needed for a full-scale invasion. This, Al Jazeera reports, after unnamed US officials said that Russia could capture Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, in a matter of days in an invasion that could cause between 25 000 and 50 000 civilian deaths. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister insisted his country had a strong army that was capable of defending itself, but a presidential advisor explained that, more importantly, the chances of finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis remained “substantially higher than the threat of further escalation”.
