African Union chairperson and President of Senegal, Macky Sall, and AU Commission chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said they were “following closely the developments” and were particularly disturbed by reports that “African citizens on the Ukrainian side of the border are being refused the right to cross the border to safety”. This, News24 reports, after numerous people attempting to leave Ukraine raised their displeasure on how they are being treated. Ukraine has meanwhile denied reports of discrimination based on race or nationality in the crossing of its borders, calling it “Russian disinformation”. The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said “there is no discrimination based on the race or nationality including when it comes to the crossing of the state border by foreign citizens. The first-come, first-served approach applied to all nationalities”.
