The UN Human Rights Council has appointed the first-ever independent Special Rapporteur on climate change and human rights. Ian Fry is the first rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change. He was appointed in March 2022 and starts his mandate on 1 May 2022. As UN Special Rapporteur, he will be tasked with studying how climate change affects the full enjoyment of human rights, and recommend ways to prevent these effects.
