The United Nations warns that refugees around the world may see food rations cut due to rising prices. Marking World Refugee Day the UN now estimates that 100 people have been forced to flee their homes. Ahead of the day, marked annually on 20 June, UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday visited refugees from Iraq and Afghanistan now living, working and adding to the vibrancy of New York City – home to UN Headquarters. Mr. Guterres, who was the UN High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015, stressed the vital role of developed nations in receiving refugees and providing them with opportunities, whoever they are, wherever they come from, and whenever they are forced to flee, echoing his official message for World Refugee Day, marked on Monday.
