The Governor of the US state of Virginia, Ralph Northam, has said he supports a bill introduced by legislators in the state’s House and Senate that would abolish the death penalty and convert existing capital sentences to life sentences without parole, citing racial injustices in the criminal justice system and the possibility of the state condemning innocent people. With the governor also citing personal convictions and the federal death penalty blitz of 2020 as reasons motivating his push to end capital punishment, Future Media News contacted the director of the Legal Assistance Centre, Toni Hancox, who says she agrees with his call.
