A group of war veterans calling themselves the ‘Namibian Refugees Repatriated in 1989’ handed over a petition to the United Nations Resident Coordinator to Namibia, Sen Pang on Tuesday. The Namibia press agency reports that in their petition they state that at independence in 1990, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees agreed to repatriate to Namibia, all Namibians who were refugees in Angola and other countries, and an estimated amount of US$ 21 million was budgeted to help all the refugees with their individual needs and family rehabilitation among the benefits. However, according to them, 31 years after independence nothing has been done to help war veterans reintegrate into Namibian society through the reintegration assistance package earmarked for them in line with UN resolution 435 of 1978.
