The 2020 report by the Varieties of Democracy Project at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden  notes that Zambia has registered a remarkably rapid decline in the quality of democracy since the last election in 2016. Nor, says Honorary Research Fellow Nicole Beardsworth, is there great optimism about the next set of elections, due to take place in less than four months. Observers have serious concerns ahead of the polls, one of the main ones being the quality of the voters’ roll. This as the electoral commission, having scrapped the previous roll that had been in use for over a decade, then allocated just 38 days to register more than 8 million people in the middle of the rainy season.
