Former South African President Jacob Zuma has officially asked that senior prosecutor Billy Downer recuses himself from his trial in the High Court in Pietermaritzburg. Zuma and French weapons company Thales will stand trial on corruption charges related to the controversial arms deal of the 1990s. Downer also prosecuted when Zuma’s former financial adviser, Schabir Shaik, was found guilty of corruption 16 years ago. Newflash reports that the National Prosecuting Authority says Zuma’s submission looks the same as one the courts rejected earlier, but they will react to it in court when the trial starts on Tuesday.
